"I wanted each townhouse to feel inherently distinct, offering a foundation that allows for individuality once the homeowners move in."
Kate O'Connor, Interior Designer, The Look Design
For the kitchens, durability was paramount. As someone who loves cooking, Kate appreciates cabinetry and benchtops that stand up to daily use. The StyleLite TruMatte cabinetry offers a soft matte finish resistant to scratches, stains, moisture, and fingerprints, the last being a particularly welcome feature! Its non-porous surface also makes cleaning easy.
The Silestone Quartz benchtops combine premium minerals and recycled materials in a low-silica surface, bringing together sustainability and performance. Colours with subtle veining and texture were chosen for each home, then carried through into the splashback tiles to create a considered relationship between surfaces.
Smaller details are just as important to the overall scheme. Cabinetry handles and bathroom accessories coordinate with the brushed nickel tapware, creating consistency throughout. Choosing this finish over chrome or black was a deliberate step towards a timeless aesthetic that homeowners can enjoy for years, without relying on passing trends.
"Steering away from chrome or black was important for me in order to maintain a timeless aesthetic to be enjoyed for years to come... no design fads necessary."
Kate O'Connor, Interior Designer, The Look Design
Bathrooms offer a wonderful opportunity to explore the interplay between surfaces. Large-format tiles were chosen for their textural depth, pattern, and colour, then paired with a slightly deeper paint tone on the tongue-and-groove feature walls. These combinations create richness while retaining the calm, welcoming feel of the wider scheme.
While the bathrooms acknowledge classic Hamptons style, Kate has given them a more contemporary edge. Fluted baths and basins provide a real WOW factor, complemented by back-lit recessed shelving above the baths and within the showers. These details bring practicality and aesthetics together, making the spaces as enjoyable to use as they are to look at.
Carefully considered lighting is integral to how a finished home feels. It can bring warmth to a room or create a subtle evening glow. Alongside the recessed shelving, LED strip lighting beneath the kitchen toe-kicks introduces a sense of luxury in the evenings and on darker days, a low-power design feature that Kate considers worth its weight in gold.
The kitchen pendants add another layer of personality. As well as providing task lighting, their designs bring flair to the open-plan kitchen, dining, and living areas. From fluted opaque glass to handblown amber shades, each selection complements the home's individual palette and atmosphere.
Throughout the project, these choices were considered together. Flooring, cabinetry, tiles, tapware, and lighting each contribute to a scheme that feels cohesive, with enough variation to ensure every townhouse has a character of its own.
